Made to fit.

The cottage at Boulders is having a little face lift.

The small rooms which once sheltered our young children, find themselves outgrown.

There is something sad about that.

This is why it has taken us so long to alter its trusty, contained loveliness.

And yet, there is something delightful about needing more space, making room for the new, adding and opening and welcoming.

More important even then the extra bedrooms, is the kitchen.

When we bought the house, the previous owners took out anything that wasn't nailed down.

Really.

The alarm. The TV aeriel. Even shells and pebbles from the garden...

We came up to Cape Town for our first holiday there and found the kitchen was just an empty shell!

So without meaning to really, I was setting a new trend for an unfitted kitchen!

Everything except the kitchen sink, freestanding and unmatched.

Still, after years of feeding the holiday troops I need a little more arm room.

Maybe a few conveniences would feel relieved to fit in.

Picnics for the beach, and scones on the patio, and pasta for monopoly, and shabbas feasts...

A kitchen with a view...
